South Pacific 2018

Gerry and I are starting off 2018 with a trip to Easter Island and the South Pacific!

This journey will begin by taking us back to Lima, Peru for 2 nights before we board the Oceania ship “Marina” for our 18 day cruise to Easter Island and the islands of the South Pacific.

Easter Island (also known as Rapa Nui) is a territory of Chili and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995.  It has approximately 5,800 residents, 60% of whom are descendants of the aboriginal Rapanui.  Easter Island is one of the most remote islands in the world.  It is 2,182 miles west of Chili and the closest island is Pitcairn (with a population of 42 – yes 42), 1289 miles further west.  We cannot wait to see the Moai  (Mow Eye) statues!

It will take us four days of cruising to get to Easter Island.  Weather and seas permitting, we will then be tendered to the island.   There is no port.  We will have all our fingers crossed hoping that we have the chance to go ashore to see this magnificent island.

We then cruise another two days before we arrive at the Pitcairn islands.  Although we cannot get off the ship, the cruise brings Pitcairn residents onboard ship to provide a lecture and allow them to sell their crafts.

After another few days of cruising, we will arrive at the first of the Polynesian islands.  Over the next six days, we will visit:  Fakarava, Rangiroa, Bora Bora, Raiatea, Moorea and Tahiti.  I think we can handle this view:

Our cruise tour ends in Papeete, Tahiti and we will then fly to Maui for four days where we hope to see the whales wintering in warmer waters, drive the Hana Highway, see the sunrise in Haleakala (we did this in 1983) and return to see the Warren and Annabelle magic show.

And the best part?  We get to experience this with Ralph and Donna with whom we have shared so many adventures!
